IRELAND’S OWN IS the country’s longest-running magazine, having been in print since 1902.
The Penfriends page is an institution of the publication, a section where readers can place ads in search of friendship or something more. It’s a special place, and looking at the ads you get a funny, sweet, and wonderfully quirky picture of Ireland.
1. The country is basically summed up in the abbreviations guide
RC – Roman Catholic. SD – Social Drinker. CW – Country Western. (Also important to differentiate between a Good Sense of Humour and a Very Good Sense of Humour.)
2. But there’s a lot more you can learn. For example, we’re a nation of chancers
WLTM a single lady or in an unstable marriage who would like to start a new life.
There’s a workaround for everything, sure.
3. Notions are abhorred
A plain country-loving woman in rags, shawl and wellingtons. No fancy rigouts like them Kardashians, for the love of god.
4. A love for Daniel O’Donnell is valued above everything
“Please God you will win the ticket of a lifetime to my heart.”
5. But a good NCT is pretty attractive too
Shows you can look after things.
6. We have very simple tastes
A pint of milk and some fresh air. It’s all you need.
7. And food is often the way to our hearts
Just give us a good feed. Melon, baked potato, homemade soup, or whatever you’re having yourself.
8. We don’t appreciate any messers
Honesty, loyalty, no criminal convictions,a mini van – all very desirable traits in a partner.
9. And fiercely value our independence
She’s been off out doing her thing for 71 years but now she might entertain a suitor. #goals
10. We can be romantic if we feel like it
Thirty-four years holding a candle for Mary from Cullen. Thirty-four!
11. But mostly we’re just looking for a bit of cop on
Is there anywhere on this planet a decent, honest, reliable, trustworth, tall, handsome, hunk of a man, over 60s, who actually knows how to treat a lady?
Well? Is there?
12. And for the young ones to stop gallivanting and settle down
Want him settled I’m now 89yrs.
And aren’t they right. Please never change, Penfriends.
Thank you to Darragh Doyle for the pics!
